UPDATE/CHANGE TO LOCATIONS: Portable Camera Units added to Automated Photo Enforcement Program

4:30 PM UPDATE

The correct signage is now displayed at 3219 Detroit and 4123 Pearl Road. As such, both cameras are now fully functional.

3:30 PM UPDATE

Today, the first day of deployment for our new PCUs has resulted in some modifications due to technical and signage issues.

The locations below have the correct signage and are operational:

  • 4050 Superior Ave
  • 2416 E. 55th St
  • 2300 St. Clair Ave

The following locations need additional signage:

  • 3219 Detroit
  • 4123 Pearl Rd

Xerox has been instructed to dismiss all tickets until the correct signage is displayed.  They have currently dispatched a crew to work on this and anticipate it will be resolved in the next 2 hours.

The 11400 Block of Edgewater Dr. eastbound location was shut down and reassessed once the PCU was delivered.  The City was concerned that due to the densely wooded tree lawns of this area that the PCU and signage would be hidden from drivers.  The intent of the PCUs is to be a visible reminder for people to slow down and drive safely.  As such, the City will re-evaluate the Edgewater Dr. location.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Portable Camera Units added to Automated Photo Enforcement Program

**UPDATE/CHANGE TO LOCATIONS: Portable Camera Units added to Automated Photo Enforcement Program**

Operation Safe Streets, the City’s Automated Photo Enforcement Program, is now deploying “Portable Camera Units” (PCUs). PCUs are self-contained and can be moved from location to location, offering the city increased opportunities to reduce speeds on city streets and increase safety for the traveling public.

“Ultimately, the goal of Operation Safe Streets is to save lives and prevent injuries,” said Martin L. Flask, Public Safety Director. “The portable camera units are a visible reminder for people to slow down and drive safely.”

PCUs do not require an officer to stay with the unit, and they can be deployed to locations where Fixed Pole Camera Units cannot be constructed or where Mobile Speed Camera Units cannot be parked safely. It is anticipated that these units will help:

  • Reduce speed in residential neighborhoods and school zones;
  • Change driver behavior through voluntary compliance with traffic laws;
  • Educate the public and increase public awareness;
  • Reduce accident severity, and
  • Augment the efforts of traditional law enforcement.

Permanently installed signage like that pictured here will alert drivers that PCUs may be in use in that area. The camera will automatically record a speeding violation. A Cleveland Police Officer reviews the results and if approved, a citation will then be mailed to the owner of the vehicle.

PCUs will move from location to location as necessary. Currently, PCUs are deployed at the following locations:

  • 4050 Superior Avenue
  • 11400 Block of Edgewater Drive
  • 2416 E 55th Street
  • 2300 St Clair Avenue
  • 3219 Detroit Avenue
  • 4123 Pearl Road
