Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation (CxI) is newly established multidisciplinary research center connecting research groups of numerous biotechnological, chemical and technical fields with major players in industry and environmental companies. The project aims to characterize interactions between nanoiron and natural microbial populations. Zerovalent nanoiron is predominantly used for remediation of polluted soils and groundwater; however its application on eutrophic waters has not been thoroughly studied yet. Nanoiron can act as a powerful green scavenger of free bioavailable phosphates. Moreover, it has a direct effect on cyanobacteria or algae. Before an environmental clean-up application the nanoparticulate material must be carefully studied and characterized.
